By TuVibe News Desk – UDA Proposes Raila as Kenya’s Next Prime Minister ; In a surprising political twist, the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has proposed the inclusion of Raila Odinga in the government, with calls for the creation of a Prime Minister position tailored for the opposition leader. This comes after Odinga’s failed bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship, which President William Ruto strongly supported.
Senator Samson Cherargei, a staunch UDA member and Ruto ally, is leading the push to amend the 2010 Constitution and introduce the Prime Minister’s role—an office that he believes should be occupied by Odinga.
“Raila’s experience in governance and leadership should not go to waste. If we are serious about uniting the country, the Prime Minister’s role should be created, and he should take it,” Cherargei stated.

Cherargei’s sentiments have been echoed by Belgut MP Nelson Koech, another key Ruto supporter, who argues that Raila’s presence in the government could stabilize the political climate.
“If President Ruto was willing to back Raila for the AUC chairmanship, then he should also be considered for a key leadership role here at home,” Koech noted.
This proposal aligns with recent government moves that have seen members of Odinga’s Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) take up strategic positions in Ruto’s administration. Political observers believe this could be the beginning of a broad-based government that includes opposition figures.
A Step Toward a UDA-Raila Alliance?
The push for Odinga’s inclusion in government has raised speculation about a possible political deal between Kenya Kwanza and Azimio la Umoja. If the proposal to create a Prime Minister’s position is adopted, it would mark a major shift in the country’s political landscape—potentially resembling the handshake era of 2018 between Raila and former President Uhuru Kenyatta.
While Ruto has repeatedly denied any plans for a handshake, recent developments suggest a more flexible approach to governance. The inclusion of ODM members in key government roles and the push for constitutional reforms indicate a changing political strategy.
Will Raila Become Kenya’s Next Prime Minister?
For this proposal to materialize, Parliament must approve constitutional amendments through a referendum or a supermajority vote. While this process could take months, the momentum behind the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) report, which recommended governance reforms, suggests that the conversation is already gaining traction.
However, the proposal may face opposition from sections of UDA and Kenya Kwanza supporters who campaigned against constitutional amendments. Critics argue that creating a Prime Minister’s position could be a way of rewarding political elites rather than serving the interests of ordinary Kenyans.
What This Means for Kenya’s Politics
If UDA succeeds in amending the Constitution to introduce the Prime Minister’s position, Raila Odinga could find himself back in government in an official capacity—a major development in his decades-long political career.
For now, all eyes are on President William Ruto, Raila Odinga, and Parliament, as the nation watches whether this proposal will become a reality.
