At least 16 people dead on Nairobi-Nakuru highway

At least 16 people were confirmed dead on Thursday after a road accident involving Pwani University bus and a Matatu at the Kayole Bridge along the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway.

According to the Pwani University deputy Vice Chancellor, Professor James Kahindi, two buses left the University to attend a national sports event at Chepkoilel campus. The two buses were carrying 120 students, four drivers and one sports officer. Unfortunately one of the buses got involved in this fatal road accident.

Prof. Kahindi added that they were relying on information from the people due to the distance and therefore, they requested the Pwani University chief security officer to travel from Nairobi where he was on a duty call and visit the accident’s scene to gather more information and inform the university the next appropriate measures to take.

According to the Nation Media group, both the Matatu and the bus were heading towards Nakuru when the accident occurred.

Eye witness, Ruth Wambui said that the Bus driver lost control after hitting a matatu that was joining the main road after picking a passenger before landing on a ditch on the roadside. Ruth added that the bus driver was aware of the impending danger but he was on a high speed and as a result he hooted continuously before the collision.

Another witness, Simon Njoroge said that the brakes failed while bus was on a high speed and in the process of trying to control, the bus hit the matatu twice from the rear before landing on the roadside ditch leading to death of at least 16 people.https://tuvibe.co.ke/elon-musk-auction-wednesday/

The victims of the accident were rushed to Naivasha sub-county hospital. It was dramatic scene as the medical personnel attended the injured. According to the hospital’s superintendent, Mr Warui, the hospital received 86 victims of the accident.

This becomes one of the most fatal road accidents to have occurred in 2023 where more that 16 people have been confirmed dead while the country face a political divide clash.
